Eco Tour of Ireland Day 9 Part 3

Crann Og Eco Accommodation, Activities & Organic Farm

Well fed and revitalised (Thanks Leen Organics) I set off for my final stop off of the day – A ‘Place To Be’.. Crann Og just outside Gort in Galway.

Crann Og offer Eco Accommodation, Workshops and Spiritual Retreats year round.  Community ethos is strong with money raised from events often going to local charities.

Nature and Health feature strongly with regular Yoga and Meditation workshops taking place and the site is available for those looking to hold workshops in a peaceful and natural space.

The ancient woodlands offer a space for reflection and getting back in touch with your natural self. Great fun for kids to play in too.

Teenature workshops are planned for 2015 whereby teens can get introduced to nature through Forest school education courses.

I found Crann Og to be highly inspirational – Flor’s use of found materials is astonishing (the playground!!) and the things that man can make with pallets will astound you!

I particularly loved the shared kitchen yurt with an open chimney to the stars.

Eco Tour of Ireland Day 10 Part 1

Tralee Bay Wetlands

Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre has an Observation Tower, Lakeside Café, Interactive Wildlife Exhibition, Boat Tours, Bird Hides, light Watersports & Activity Lake making it an ideal stopoff for families visiting or living in Tralee.

On the day I popped by it was lashing rain so unfortunately I didn’t get to see it in it’s best light – those paddleboats are much more attractive in the sunshine I’m sure 🙂

However it was good weather for ducks, geese and generally animals that like, well, wetlands!

So after a short chat with ecologist & tour guide David Mc Cormick I headed out to the Observation Tower which does indeed give great aerial views of the wetlands.

The place was buzzing with a large group of Leaving cert students who were visiting at the time all learning about the local area.

The land was an old wasteland site and was reclaimed with help from Failte Ireland and has been landscaped into reed beds and marshlands.

A great family day out or school tour option.

David gives a great overview of the centre and what it offers visitors on our audio below.

Eco Tour of Ireland Day 10 Part 2

A Visit to Gortbrac Organic Farm & Eco Cabins Tralee

Like magic, the rain disappeared after I left Tralee Bay Wetlands and I found myself arriving (very easily – thanks again to my trusty Smartphone companion Google Maps) at a quaint little sign for Gortbrac Organic Farm.

Gortbrac Organic Farm is much more than an Organic farm. Owned, Created (literally) and Managed by Ian and Eileen Mc Grigor – with help from Cathy Eastman :), Gortbrac Organic Farm offer comfortable private Eco Accommodation and lot’s of really cool and interesting workshops and events throughout the year.

Workshops held here include Mushroom Foraging, Natural Cosmetics, Seaweed Foraging, Biodiversity, Woodland Management, Coppicing and oh so much more!

Ian’s background is in biodiversity and education so he can put together a customised grow plan for your school, club, business or private area based on working with what already exists and the introduction of suitable native species.

Accommodation is available and eco friendly with two eco cabins available for rent both utilising best sustainable practices yet having a bit of luxury (regular loos anyone?) thrown in for good measure!

I really enjoyed my visit here and plan to head back very soon – for the seaweed forage if I can get out of a pre arranged date!

Eco Tour of Ireland Day 10 Part 3

BlueBerry Hill Activity Farm Kerry

As I was making my way from Tralee to Cork I had decided to fit in a visit to the area of Sneem Co Kerry, having heard much about it from a 1980’s band trip my sister had made in her late teens. The memory of her ‘I love Sneem’ hat stays with me to this day!
Not since the beautiful drive through Leitrim and Sligo had I experienced such incredible vistas and landscapes. Seriously folks, if you have never driven through the ‘Cork and Kerry Mountains’ a la Thin Lizzy then now is the time to do so – (well maybe in the spring..)
I had arranged to visit the very cute sounding Blueberry Hill Farm, an activity farm where visitors get to interact with a number of farm animals including goats, pigs, cows, geese, hens and more.

Sigi and Yvonne met me upon my arrival and we began our interactive tour with a bit of bottle feeding the goats! What fun! I can imagine the squeals of excitement that children would make from the enjoyment of being able to literally touch and feed the animals.

A Way of Life!

Chatting with Sigi it became apparent that this is more than a way to make a living – this is their way of life. Indeed Sigi and Yvonne decided to sell their house and travel around  Europe before discovering and falling in love with Sneem and have worked hard building Blueberry Hill Farm from scratch.

The farm has goats, piglets, a beautiful cow (it’s rare I call cows beautiful trust me) and lots of very amusing fowl – (see the dinnertime video below to see what I mean) which visitors get to meet, touch and feed whilst Sigi explains a bit about them and promotes choosing free range meat over intensively farmed animals reared for meat only.

Candlemaking & Scone Making Fun!

The farm also has a very cool barn which is the venue for a spot of candlemaking where children from a very young age to adults all get to make a lovely keepsake that will actually be useful – a candle! Sigi and Yvonne originally had a candle making business where they created beautiful mutli coloured and multi shaped candles which they sold at markets and to craft shops throughout Ireland and it was from this business that they were able to finance the purchase of the land many years ago.

Activity Tours

There is a choice of tours and the full tour includes the preparation of scones where the children are shown how butter is made and they use the buttermilk and cream on the scones which are devoured afterwards!
Blueberry Hill Farm also offer lot’s of workshops throughout the year for adults interested in self sufficiency.

Self Sufficiency Workshops

One in particular that really interested me was the Home Dairy workshop where you can learn to transform milk into delicious yoghurt, soft cheeses, hard cheeses and real butter. This workshop will give you knowledge and skills which you can put into practice at home afterwards. They also offer Blacksmithing and Candle Making for adults.

Unique Hen & Stag Events!

Blueberry hill farm have some great ideas for Hen and Stag parties looking for something a little unusual – for eg the hens can create a beautiful horseshoe shaped ‘Good Luck’ candle with engravings on it which the bride can have at her wedding, whilst the stags can build a raft to sail across the lake in order to find the hidden whiskey! Or vice versa! no gender stereotypes here- many stags enjoy getting the groom to experience married life earlier by learning how to prepare and bake scones – pink apron supplied!
A freshly prepared lunch using their own homegrown organic veg and salads is included in the hen and stag packages.
Pre booking is essential for blueberry farm tours and events and they are open all year round so do give them a call on 087 3647371 to avoid disappointment!

Eco Tour of Ireland Finale

Podpairc Top Of The Rock Pods - Eco Tour Ireland with Roz Kelly EcoActiveSocial

Top of The Rock PodPairc West Cork

My nights’ stay on Day 10 was spent at Top of the Rock Pod Pairc with the aim of spending some time with owners David and Elizabeth Ross and here my trusty Google Maps GPS proved it’s worth again.

A beautiful journey it was, through stunning scenery – so stunning that I was about an extra hour than planned as I simply HAD to keep stopping to take photos en route – I even met a young stag pottering down the road before he leapt back into the forest!

Anyway, upon my arrival I was welcomed by David who showed me to my pod for the night – the Celtic luxury pod – OOOhhhh! Once I knew where I was going he invited me to join a few others at the outdoor camp fire where we were treated to homemade apple cake and toasted marshmallows.

What was particularly lovely – especially with my rather tired head from such a long day, was the introductions that he made for all of us there who included a bride and groom on their honeymoon and their family members from Galway who had taken the chance to catch up with this now emigrated couple (they now live in Australia and I would like to wish them a very happy life together there!)

After a nice hour or so chatting by the fire I decided to head to bed as myself and David had planned to visit a local Alpaca Farm, Tour the Pod Pairc grounds and meet a few other Eco minded people in the area in the morning before I headed back to the East coast.

Waterfall Alpaca Farm

Thursday morning dawned bright and clear, perfect conditions for our day ahead. After my tasty ‘breakfast in a bag’ I met up with David and we headed off to visit Waterfall Alpaca Farm who are friends of David and Elizabeth.

I have mentioned before how collaboration is popular between local Eco businesses and this is a perfect example of that. Both businesses recommend the other to passing travellers and promote one another where possible.

Waterfall Alpaca Farm is run by Markus and Emma Bird with whom we headed off for a riverside walk after which we met the famed alpacas- So cute!

We couldn’t find them anywhere then Emma started calling them and they all came rushing up the hill then shyly looked at us from under very long lashes! I think I have been smitten by these gorgeous creatures.

To find out more about this fun family day out visit www.westcorkalpacas.com

Bumblebee Flower Farm

We also met a lovely group at Waterfall Alpaca Farm including Mags of Bumblebee Flower Farm who grows beautiful chemical free flowers for events and weddings.

Mags has since supplied multiple restaurants around Ireland with her edible flowers and now focuses on soil health workshops.

visit www.bumblebeeflowerfarm.ie for details

After our visit David and I headed back to Top Of The Rock for a walk around the farm.

The farm focuses on biodiversity with lot’s of bird friendly flowers & cover planted and the walk leads down to the river which is bursting with trout, salmon, kingfishers and much more – perfect for the nature lover.

The grey partridge has also recently been successfully re-introduced to the area.

David told me how the local farmers are joining the Walkways Scheme: Under the scheme, landowners receive payments for the development, maintenance and enhancement of approved marked ways and looped walking routes through their land.

With 16 farmers in the area already joined up it’s no wonder Drimoleague is a walkers paradise!

The farm itself offers a lovely river walk that is a perfect introduction to the area and brings you around in a circle back to the Pod Pairc where you can find out lot’s more about the local area and local walking routes .  These include St Finbarr’s pilgrim walk, in their custom made walking centre full of maps, information and suggestions plus internet access with kitchen facilities for walking groups also available.

Top of the Rock also offer conference facilities -with a large projector screen, black out blinds and seats up to 80 people comfortably as well as retreats for those looking for a spiritual getaway.

Pod Pairc Accommodation

The Pod Pairc itself is very nicely laid out with a variety (7 in total) of pods available to rent including standard pods, family pods and luxury pods.

There is a modern communal kitchen with each pod having it’s own assigned cupboard supplied with delph and pots etc.. and very nice easy to use showers where you pop a €1 coin into the meter for 5 minutes of hot shower time in clean and modern private cubicles.

The shower was fabulous and secure – I mention this having been walked in on during a shower many years ago when hostelling so a secure shower area is important to me and no doubt to others! 🙂

There is also a games room and again upstairs in the walking centre you can relax on a sofa and read a book while young children can play with the supplied toys, or eat as a group if the weather outside is not ideal to picnicking (it is Ireland after all)

There are also facilities for 5 camper van spaces and 5 or so tent pitches.

Open all year round, Top Of The Rock is the perfect destination for Walking groups, Romantic couples, Families and ideal for touring WestCork.
