Organic Edible Wedding Flowers & Baltimore Bay!

Up bright and early Sunday morning for the 5 hour drive to Drimoleague in West Cork to meet Mags and Steve of Bumblebee Farm aka Ruby Harte Floral Design who were having an open day on their organic flower farm. The weather was mixed with intermittent short heavy showers so we decided to do the floral demonstration in one of their gorgeous flower filled polytunnels.

Mags demonstrated how to make an edible flower bouquet using seasonal flowers and showcased a fabulous wedding cake that had been decorated with edible flowers.
Growing edible flowers is a new side to their business and they will be supplying restaurants nationwide as well as offering their products privately to the general public. These edible flowers are great in salads, on wedding cakes and cute when ice-cubed for drinks! Watch this space for news and updates!

After our trip to Bumblebee Flower farm we headed south to Baltimore via Skibbereen. Having never been there before we were surprised at how small Baltimore is but such fun!
We stayed in Caseys Hotel in one of their self catering apartments – only €80 BB (sleeps 2) on a bank holiday weekend – where would you get it? Really comfy bed, great hot shower, and a galley type kitchen so you can cook your own food if you wish.

As it happens we ate out at Le Jolie Brise Retaurant in Baltimore enjoying fabulous Fresh Oysters ( mini complaint that the oysters had not been pre-separated from shells and each had a tiny bit of shell but waiter very kindly took these off the bill) and a delicious hot n’ spicy pizza with a glass of chardonnay. Recommend going there.
After a pint or two in the friendly Bushes’ bar on the waterfront ( bless us all in our anoraks and hats determined to watch the sunset over pints outdoors in the ‘Irish Summer’) we headed back to Caseys ( 10 min stroll up the road) where we met Dominick of The West Cork Brewing Company who shared his passion for local craft beers introducing us to the Wild Atlantic Way Craft Beer Trail on which they are involved.
Due to the weather we were unable to partake of a Whale watching tour trip with Nic of  WhaleWatchWest Cork  however,  now that we know a great place to stay we will back soon to experience this exciting day out!

All in all a visit to Baltimore West Cork is a great weekend break, we recommend including a trip to Bumblebee Flower Farm ( 15 min drive away), a visit to the West Cork Brewing Company and a Whale Watching Tour during your stay!
